Court ( d . 1866; see D.N.B .) ; step-mother of Elizabeth Adelaide Manning ( q.v .) . * c Member of the cttee. formed by Emily Davies and others 'for obtaining the admission of women to University Local Examinations' 1862-65; after success had been achieved the members formed th emselves into the Kensington Soc., of which Mrs Manning became Pres. and which met regularly at her house in Kensington for the discussion of subjects of common interest, 1865-71 (amongst members were Mme Bodichon, Miss Beale, Miss Buss, Miss Elizabeth Ga rrett, Mrs Russell Gurney and Miss Anna Swanwick); became first Mistress of The College, Hitchin, M. 1869; never intended to remain for more than one term; came with her step-dau. Elizabeth Adelaide Manning ( q.v .) for the express purpose 'of appearing before an unbelieving and suspicious public as the responsible promoters of tbe new College' and of helping 'to give to the institution at the outset a stamp of seriousness and solidity' (Emily Davies, Indian Mag .
