Michs. 1861; B.A. 1865. Lieut., 1st Batt., 24th Regt., 1865; Adjutant, Dec. 1868. Served in Malta, Gibraltar and in South Africa. Took part in the Zulu War in 1879, and was killed at Isandlwanha, Natal, Jan. 22, 1879, whilst endeavouring to save the Queen's Colour of his regiment. Mentioned in despatches, and in the supplement to the London Gazette, Mar. 15, 1879: 'Lieut. Melvill . . . on account of the gallant effort made by him to save the Queen's Colour of his regiment after the disaster of Isandlwanha. . . . The Colours supposed to have been lost were found wrapped round his dead body. Would have been recommended to Her Majesty for the Victoria Cross had he survived.' Ultimately, on Jan. 15, 1907, the London Gazette stated that 'His Majesty King Edward VII had approved of the Cross being delivered to the representative of the dead hero'; it was given to his widow (née Sarah Elizabeth Reed), who died at Johannesburg, Jan. 14, 1943.
