Civil engineer and astronomer. M.I.C.E. At first (1859) employed on drainage work in the Fens. Partner in the firm of McClean and Stileman, 1862. Assisted his father in survey for railways to Moldavia, 1862. Resident engineer of Barrow Docks and of the Furness Railway; retired 1870. Established an astronomical observatory at Tunbridge Wells, 1874; engaged in solar and stellar spectroscopic work. Discovered the presence of oxygen in the helium class of stars, 1897. Gold medal, Royal Astronomical Society, 1889. Married, 1865, Ellen, youngest dau. of John Greg, of Escowbeck, Lancs. Gave £12,500 to the University in 1890 for the endowment of Studentships in Astronomy and Physical Optics in memory of Sir Isaac Newton. Bequeathed to the Fitzwilliam Museum a valuable collection of MSS., early printed books, and objects of art, including ivories, enamels, gems and some fine Egyptian antiquities.
