Fellow of Bombay University. Chairman of Bombay Town Council. M.P. for Oldham, 1885-92; for Cardiff, 1895-1900. President, Institute of Journalists, 1896-7 and 1897-8. Married (1) (1867), Anna M., dau. of Philip Whitehead; (2) 1900, Mrs Sara Kennedy, dau. of Thomas Hale, M.D., of Rochdale, but had no issue.
