Took to art and became a landscape painter, 1877-97. Worked in oil and water-colour, and also executed many expressive etchings, several of which were reproduced in the Magazine of Art. One of his pictures, 'Isles of the Sea,' is in the Guildhall Collection in London; 'Ships that Pass in the Night' is in the National Gallery, and 'Evening Quiet' in the Tate Gallery.
