Before his admission had begun his medical studies at the Sussex County Hospital, and had gone to Guy's, where he obtained several prizes. Medical Tutor at St Mary's Hospital, 1875; Medical Registrar at Guy's; Resident Medical Officer at the London Fever Hospital. While discharging the duties of these posts, entered at Caius, and travelled to Cambridge every evening by the last train in order to keep his residence, returning to London by an early morning train. Assistant Physician at Guy's Hospital, 1881. Employed by the British Association to visit the principal towns with the view of organizing the collective system of registration of diseases; in this capacity he attended the Medical Congress at Copenhagen. 'A tall, muscular man of a dark complexion, impulsive in manner and possessed of extraordinary powers of work.' Author, Treatise on the Sphygmograph.
