In Paris during the 1848 Revolution; between 1848 and 1865 travelled in Egypt, Palestine, Russia, Algeria, Canada and the U.S.A. Studied means of marine propulsion; in 1865 perfected his canoe, the 'Rob Roy,' in which he navigated most of the chief rivers of Europe.
Published A Thousand Miles in the Rob Roy Canoe, 1866, which had an enormous success and helped to popularize canoeing in England.
Subsequently travelled by canoe through Norway and Sweden, and by the Baltic to Denmark and Heligoland.
Member of the London School Board.
Married, and had issue.
Resided latterly at Bournemouth, where he died July 16, 1892.
