Michell, Robert Williams. Adm. at CAIUS, Oct. 1, 1880. [Eldest] s. of Richard Ferris, merchant, of Glanmor, Truro. B. [Aug. 25], 1863, at Truro. School, Honiton. Matric. Michs. 1880 (signs amongst Sidney entrants, but no record of adm. there); B.A. 1884; M.A. 1889; M.B., B.Chir. 1894; M.D. 1900. Junior Demonstrator in Human Anatomy, 1888-92. At St Bartholomew's Hospital. M.R.C.S.; M.R.C.P. 1895. House Physician, General Lying-in Hospital, York Road, Lambeth. Served as Civil Surgeon with Rundle's Column during the S. African War, 1898-1901. Practised in Trinity Street, Cambridge. A very keen oarsman. 'He devoted his attention to students and their health in relation to athletics,' making a special study of cardiac problems. Served in the Great War, 1914-19 (Capt., R.A.M.C.; mentioned in despatches). 'On July 3rd, 1916, whilst bringing in wounded men from No Man's Land, he received severe wounds. On being struck, he is reported to have said, "Never mind me, it is well worth it, we have brought in seven of the men." ' Recommended for the Victoria Cross. Died of wounds July 19, 1916; buried at Huntingdon Road cemetery, Cambridge. The Michell Rowing Cup was established in his memory. (Venn, II. 445; Univ.
