Apprenticed to a Liverpool merchant, 1814-21; set up in business as a brewer, 1825.
Began to construct reflecting telescopes; inventor of a new machine for grinding specula.
Built an observatory at Starfield, near Liverpool, 1840, where he observed the satellites of Neptune and was one of the first observers of Saturn's dusky ring.
President, Royal Astronomical Society, 1870-2. Moved his observatory to Bradstones, 1854.
The first clearly to ascertain composition of the Uranian System.
Constructed a reflecting telescope at Valetta, Malta, in 1861, where he worked for six years and catalogued 600 new nebulae.
Resided at Ray Lodge, near Maidenhead from 1865, and built an observatory there.
F.R.S., 1849; Royal medal, 1858.
Died Oct. 5, 1880, at Maidenhead.
