Easter, 1778; Scholar; B.A. (4th Wrangler) 1779; 1st Chancellor's medal, 1779; M.A. 1782. Fellow of Downing, 1800; named as one of the original charter Fellows. Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, Feb. 24, 1774. Called to the Bar, June 16, 1781. Serjeant-at-Law, June 12, 1799. University Counsel, 1807-25. King's Serjeant, 1806. King's Antient Serjeant, 1819. Went first on the Norfolk Circuit, but soon changed for the Western, of which he was for many years the leader, retiring in 1817. Refused various honours, including, in 1813, the Solicitor-Generalship, although it was pressed upon him by the Prime Minister at the request of the Prince Regent. His independence was proverbial, the toast of 'Serjeant Lens and the independence of the Bar' being given at public dinners. In politics an early friend of Fox, and remained a Constitutional Whig.
