Lieut.-Col., 4th Manchester Rifle Volunteers, 1877. Succeeded his father, Dec. 13, 1880, as 26th Earl of Crawford and 9th Earl of Balcarres. Organized [p.174] an astronomical station at Cadiz for observing the eclipse of the sun, 1870. Erected an observatory at Dunecht, near Aberdeen, 1872. Made an expedition to Mauritius to observe the transit of Venus, 1874. Presented to the nation his telescopes, instruments and astronomical library, 1888, for the purpose of establishing an observatory at Edinburgh; this was opened in 1896. President of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1878 and 1879. F.R.S., 1878; F.S.A. Hon. LL.D., Edinburgh, 1882. Trustee of the British Museum, 1885. Knight of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in England. Commander of the Legion of Honour. Died Jan. 31, 1913. Father of Lionel (1897).
