'Candidate in a severe [Parliamentary] contest for the County of Forfar, in which he was defeated by the family of Panmure. The struggle was so exhausting to both sides that it resulted in a family compact by which it was settled that the Houses of Panmure and Strathmore should in future return a Member alternately.'
