Lived first at Bartley Lodge in the New Forest, and devoted himself to the study of botany; several species of plants bear his name. A special authority on mosses. F.L.S., 1813. Settled at Kinnordy, Forfarshire, 1826, and 'seems subsequently to have been chiefly engaged on the study of Dante.' Vice-Lieut. of Forfarshire. Married, Oct. 11, 1796, Frances, dau. of Thomas Smith, of Maker Hall, Swaledale, Yorks. Author, translations of Dante's Works in 1835, 1842 and 1845. Died Nov. 8, 1849, at Kinnordy, leaving his collection of the various editions of Dante (with the writings of his numerous commentators) and an extensive and valuable botanical library.
