The Times correspondent in the Franco-Prussian War, 1870, being with the French army at the battle of Forbach; when the French refused to allow foreign correspondents with their armies he acted in that capacity [p.197] with the Germans. Married, 1860, Katherine, dau. of Sir James Russell, of Ashestiel. Lieut.-Col., Lanark militia, 1877.
