Michs. 1781; M.A. 1784. Succeeded his father as 5th Bart., Feb. 12, 1770. M.P. for Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, 1791-6; for Heytesbury, Wilts., 1796-1802; for Stockbridge, Hants., 1807 (Jan.-Apr.). Lieut.-Col., Cheshire Militia. Among the first to offer his services to the Crown when Bonaparte threatened invasion, raising a regiment, eventually known as the King's Regiment of Cheshire Yeoman-Cavalry. Created Baron De Tabley, July 10, 1826. Instrumental in promoting an English school of painting and sculpture. His art collection at Hill Street, Berkeley Square, was open to the public. Married, Nov. 9, 1810, Georgina Maria, youngest dau. of Lieut.-Col. Cottin and had issue; she was a famous beauty, whose portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is well known.
