A man of small stature; on his laying out a garden in the East front of Trinity Hall, someone (believed to have been Archdeacon Wrangham) is alleged to have posted up the following lines: "This little garden little Jowett made / And fenced it with a little palisade." Subsequently this further couplet appeared:
""But little wit had little Dr Jowett,/ And little did this little garden show it."" The D.N.B. gives a different version and the original also appeared in Latin. Jowett was, according to Ackerman, "an elegant scholar and a man of mild and amiable manners."
Originated the "Cambridge Chimes" of Gt St Mary's Clock, 1793.
Died suddenly Nov. 13, 1813. Buried in the antechapel of Trinity Hall.
