When nominated to two benefices in the dioceses of Peterborough [ Northamptonshire ] and Lincoln [ Lincolnshire ] his Diocesan, Exeter [ Devon ], refused to countersign his testimonials, because he had, at a public meeting, used improper expressions on the Athanasian Creed, and his institutions were accordingly refused. The case was taken to the Lords in 1820, on petition of Jones, when a motion for a committee was rejected. V. of Alton, Staffordshire , 1829-57. R. of Butterleigh, Devon , 1832-57. It is suggested that it was probably because of advocacy of R.C. claims that he was instituted in 1829 to Alton [ Staffordshire ] (patron-Lord Shrewsbury) and Butterleigh [ Devon ] (Lord Chancellor). An active politician and antiquary. Author, Botanical tour through various parts of Devon and Cornwall; Historical and Monumental Antiquities of Devonshire; Flora Devoniensis, etc. Died suddenly Feb. 4, 1857, while entering the Newsroom at Cheadle, Staffordshire .
