Joined the Imperial British East Africa Company, 1888, and in 1889 took part in an expedition to explore the hinterland of the Company's territory, and to establish friendly relations with the natives. Defeated the efforts of Dr Karl Peters, the German agent, to acquire space for Germany in East Africa , by the Anglo-German Agreement of July 1, 1890. When Uganda was declared a British Protectorate in 1894, appointed a first-class administrative Assistant there; Vice-Consul, 1895; Deputy Commissioner, 1896. At great personal risk attempted to prevent a mutiny amongst the Sudanese troops [ Sudan ] in 1897; helping to collect a force and to beat back the mutineers, was seriously wounded.
