As successor to Robinson at St Catharine's, Johns immediately "had a task trying enough to break the strongest nerve." Appeal to the Visitor having proved ineffective, he himself deposed three College officers and ruthlessly reconstructed the whole organisation. "A determined man, who combined unbendable severity with genial pleasantness of manner," he achieved a task which few could have accomplished.
