Two years after inheriting an estate at Haldon, Devon , he resigned his fellowship of King's, and retired from Eton [ Buckinghamshire ].
Went to Madeira for the sake of his health and married there, in 1878, Rosa Caroline, dau. of the Rev. George de Carteret Guille, R. of Little Torrington, Devon , and had issue, a son.
Returned to England , 1882, and resided at Hampstead [ London ], where he gave "oral classical instruction" to ladies, "for his own sake as well as theirs."
Very short-sighted, he is said to have pursued a hen down Windsor Hill [ London ???], under the belief that she was his own lost hat.

A volume of extracts from his letters and journals was published by the Oxford University Press in 1897.
