His health broke down through overwork, 1841, just before he had been assured by the Lord Chancellor of his appointment to one of the new Vice-Chancellorships. An amusing but ridiculous tradition relating to his struggle with Whewell for the Senior Wranglership is recounted in the Elizabethan, XI. 99, but see W. W. Rouse Ball's Cambridge Papers, 1918, 289.
