Irving, Sir Henry. Hon. Litt.D. 1898. Rede Lecturer, 1898. S. of Samuel [Brodribb], shopkeeper, and Mary Behenna. B. Feb. 6, 1838, at Keinton Mandeville, Somerset . First public appearance on the stage as Gaston, Duke of Orleans, in Lytton's Richelieu ; first appearance in London , 1859. His first great success was in The Bells, 1871. Appeared as Hamlet, 1874, his original interpretation of the part meeting with great success; subsequently as Macbeth and as Othello, his mannerisms causing much criticism. Formed his own company at the Lyceum, with Miss Ellen Terry as leading lady, a partnership which lasted for twenty-four years. LL.D., Dublin [ Ireland ], 1892. LL.D., Glasgow [ Scotland ], 1899. Knighted, 1895, being the first actor to receive this honour. Married, July 15, 1869, Florence, dau. of Daniel James O'Callaghan, Surgeon-General in the East India Company, and had issue. Died very suddenly Oct. 13, 1905, at Bradford [ West Riding of Yorkshire ], during a provincial tour; his ashes were buried in Westminster Abbey [ London ]. As a protest against the Hon. degree given to Irving at Cambridge, Robert Whitfield Rippon, M.A., of St John's, requested the Vice-Chancellor to "erase my name from the Register of the University."
