On the Western Circuit. Recorder of Basingstoke [ Hampshire ], 1766. Appointed first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Bengal , 1773; Warren Hastings was then Governor-General, and his quarrels with the Council were reaching their climax. Knighted, 1774. Confirmed the committal of Nuncomar for forgery and sentenced him to death, 1775. Gave decision in favour of Hastings on question of his resignation of the Governor-Generalship, 1777. President of new Appeal Court over local tribunals, 1780. Recalled to answer charges of illegality, 1783; impeached by the House of Commons, he defended himself successfully against six charges, and his impeachment dropped, 1788. Resigned office, 1789. M.P. for New Romney [ Kent ], 1790-6. One of the donors of the Warren Hastings cup. Married, Jan. 18, 1768, Mary, dau. of Sir John Reade, of Shipton Court, Oxfordshire , and had issue.
