Founded the Catholic Education Crisis Fund, subscribing £5000 to it himself. Presided over the College of Arms as Deputy Earl Marshall, 1860-8, during the minority of his nephew, the 15th Duke of Norfolk. Married (1) July 22, 1851, Augusta, only dau. of George Henry Talbot, half-brother of the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury (and heiress to £80,000) and had issue; (2) July 16, 1863, the 3rd dau. of Ambrose Lisle March Phillipps de Lisle, of Garendon Park and Gracedieu Manor, Leics. Nov. 7, 1815. Matric. Michs. 1833. Styled Lord Fitzalan, 1815-42; subsequently (1842-56) Earl of Arundel and Surrey. Entered the Royal Horse Guards, 1835, retiring as Capt. M.P. for Arundel, 1837-50, and for Limerick, 1850-2. A zealous Roman Catholic, being called by Montalembert 'the most pious layman of our times.' Took, by Royal warrant, Apr. 26, 1842 (with his brothers and sisters), the name of Fitzalan before that of Howard. Succeeded his father as 14th Duke of Norfolk, Feb. 17, 1856. Hereditary Earl Marshal of England. Married, June 19, 1839, Augusta Mary Minna Catherine, dau. of Admiral Lord Lyons, G.C.B., K.C.H., and had issue. Died Nov. 25, 1860, at Arundel Castle, Sussex.
