Went to America as chief of Commission appointed to enquire into the disorders in the American Colonies, 1778. President of the Board of Trade, 1779. Lord-Lieut. of E. Riding of Yorks., 1780-2 and 1799-1807. Lord Lieut. of Ireland, 1780-2. Lord Privy Seal, 1783. K.G., 1793. Married, Mar. 22, 1770, Lady Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower, dau. of Granville Leveson, 1st Marquess of Stafford, and had issue. A cousin of Lord Byron, and was appointed his guardian in 1798; the second edition of Hours of Idleness was dedicated to him 'by his obliged ward.' Author, Poems, etc., and a tragedy, The Father's Revenge, which earned the praise of Johnson and Walpole. Died at Castle Howard, Sept. 4, 1825. (Eton Coll.
