Harveian Orator, 1837. Professor of Anatomy, 1814-17, Byron being present at
his election. Regius Professor of Physic, 1817-51. Physician to Addenbrooke's
Hospital, 1817-39. President of the Philosophical Society, 1823-5. The first
Professor of Anatomy to give regular courses on human anatomy at Cambridge,
and the first Professor of Physic to give courses on pathology and the
practice of medicine. President of Committee on Anatomy and Physiology at 3rd
meeting of the British Association, at Cambridge, 1833. Rolleston states that
'entirely as a result of his insistence and influence, the Senate passed a
Grace, Feb. 27, 1829, which recast the medical curriculum and examinations,
thus laying the foundations of the present system' (Cambridge Med.

., 167-171). Married, Mar. 31, 1819, Louisa, dau. of the Rev. George
Pollen, of L. Bookham Manor, Surrey. Resided at Fen-Ditton Hall, Cambs. Died
