Chairman of Gloucestershire Quarter Sessions, 1904-29. Chairman of the County Council, 1918. A magistrate in Gloucestershire for 71 years. Until incapacitated by an accident in 1884 well known in the hunting field. On the completion of fifty years of County service in 1927, a presentation was made to him by the County Magistracy. Still engaged in public work when, in Nov. 1934, he celebrated his 90th birthday. The foundation of the County Library was mainly due to his initiative and approach to the Carnegie Trustees. President of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, 1903-4. Knighted, 1919.
