College formed a lifelong friendship with Lightfoot, and later with F. D.
Maurice. Married, May 14, 1857, Fanny, dau. of Thomas Dyson Holland, of
Heighington, Lincs., and had issue. As marriage meant the forfeiture of his
Fellowship, he accepted the living of St Ippolyts with Gt Wymondley, Herts.,
1857, and lived a quiet secluded life there until 1872. On election to a
Fellowship at Emmanuel he returned to Cambridge in 1872, and resided at 6, St
Peter's Terrace for the remainder of his life. An ardent mountaineer and one
of the first members of the Alpine Club; a first-rate practical botanist and
natural scientist. In theological matters he kept entirely aloof from party
and controversial movements, 'his historical sense dominating his whole mind;
he aimed only at arriving at truth, not at confirming opinion.' Dr Sanday
called him 'our greatest English theologian of the century.' Author, two
Dissertations: On Monogenes Theos in Scripture and Tradition; On the
Constantinopolitan and other Eastern Creeds of the Fourth Century;
Lectures
; 'Essay on S. T. Coleridge,' in Cambridge Essays, 'which
has been regarded as one of the most successful endeavours to appreciate and
interpret Coleridge'; Tintern Abbey, a poem. Joint editor with Dr
Westcott of the New Testament in the original Greek, 1881; and, with J.
E. B. Mayor and J. B. Lightfoot, of The Journal of Classical and Sacred
Philology
. One of the authors of the New Testament Revised Version which
appeared in 1881; and of the Revised Version of 2 Maccabees and Wisdom. Died
Nov. 30, 1892, at Cambridge. M.I. in Gt St Mary's. The Hort Memorial fund for
the promotion of Biblical and Patristic research was established by
subscription in his memory, 1894. In the clerestory windows of Gt St Mary's
church his features and those of Lightfoot, Westcott, Dean Stanley, F. D.
Maurice and Dr Arnold are depicted in the faces of the six Apostles. Father of
