Herbert, George Edward Stanhope Molyneux, Lord Porchester.
Adm. pens. at TRINITY, Jan. 14, 1886. Elder s. of Henry Howard Molyneux [4th
Earl of Carnarvon] (1864), of Highclere Castle, Newbury, Berks. [by his 1st
wife, Evelyn, dau. of George, 6th Earl of Chesterfield]. B. June 26, 1866, in
London. School, Eton. Matric. 1886. Styled Baron Porchester until he succeeded
as 5th Earl of Carnarvon, in 1890. D.L. High Steward of Newbury. A well-known
owner of race-horses. After making collections of illuminated books, MSS., and
medals, turned to Egyptology, and in 1906 became associated with Howard Carter
at Thebes. They excavated together for many years, making a number of
important discoveries. After the war of 1914-19 a concession to excavate in
the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings was granted, although it was thought that
all the mysteries of this famous valley had been already disclosed. On Nov. 5,
1922, the excavators came to a wall covered with cement, on which was the seal
of the Royal Necropolis. Remarkable treasures were found as the excavation of
this Necropolis [p.338] proceeded, and ultimately resulted in the discovery of
the burial-place of King Tutankhamen. This great prize, however, was achieved
only after Lord Carnarvon's death, in Cairo, as the result of blood-poisoning
set up by a mosquitobite, Apr. 5, 1923. (G.E.C. (Carnarvon); Burke,
P. and B., 1940; The Times, Apr. 6, 1923.)
