activity in suppressing the Chartist riots, May, 1839. Succeeded his father as
2nd Earl of Powis, May 16, 1839. K.G., 1844. Distinguished himself by
successfully opposing the scheme for the union of the two sees of St Asaph and
Bangor; a subscription amounting to over £5000 was collected as a testimonial
to him, and expended in the institution of 'Powis Exhibitions' to help Welsh
students at Oxford and Cambridge. On the death of the Duke of Northumberland,
and at the invitation of the Master and Fellows of St John's, he was a
candidate for the Chancellorship of the University, in opposition to Prince
Albert. The Prince was, however, elected in 1847 after a contest arousing much
ill-feeling. Married, Feb. 9, 1818, Lady Lucy Graham, 3rd dau. of James, Duke
of Montrose, and had issue, eight children. Died Jan. 17, 1848, aged 62, at
Powis Castle, being accidentally shot by his eldest son while pheasant
