Lived at Scarborough, 1875-1900. Well known as a musician; conducted the Scarborough Orchestral Society. Closely associated with Yorkshire lawn tennis; invented the net-adjuster and folding umpire's chair used at tournaments. Author, The Legendary Lore of the Holy Wells of England; A Glossary of Dialectical Place-Nomenclature; English Goldsmiths; The Leper in England and English Leper-Houses. Compiled a Monumental History of Music, the MS. of which is in the British Museum. Editor of Barnabe Goodge's Popish Kingdoms.
