Matric. Michs. 1851. Resided three terms, and left for the Crimea. Serving in
the Hospital Commissariat Dept. during the War. Purveyor of the Forces, 1855.
Subsequently sent to Italy to organise the hospitals of the Italian Legion.
Afterwards in charge of the Belfast and then of the Portsmouth District;
retired from the Commissariat Dept., 1858. For some years engaged in mining
operations in Italy. War correspondent to The Standard in the Magdala
and Coomassie expeditions, the Franco-German War, Khiva, and the Abyssinia and
Ashanti expeditions. With Garibaldi in the Tyrol. Editor of the Union
Jack
, 1880-3. Author of many popular novels and particularly famous as a
writer of tales for boys. Was the mainstay of Beaton's Boys' Own
Magazine
, and collaborated with Archibald Forbes in a boys' annual,
Camps and Quarters, which did not long survive. Married (1) 1858,
Elizabeth Finucane, and had issue; (2) Elizabeth Keylock. Died Nov. 16, 1902,
