Haines, William Clark. Adm. pens. (age 18, sic) at CAIUS, June 14, 1828. S. of John, surgeon, of Hampstead, Middlesex. B. there [1807]. Schools, Charterhouse (Mr Arnold) and Stamford. Matric. Michs. 1828; Scholar, 1829-32; B.A. 1833. An excellent mathematician. Practised for some years as a surgeon. Went to Australia, 1848, and farmed near Geelong. Member of the Legislative Council, 1851. Member for S. Grant, Victoria Legislative Council, 1855. Premier of Victoria until the new constitution of 1854, when he received a retiring pension of £1000 per annum; Premier again until defeated in 1857. In Europe, 1858-61. On his return elected Member for Portland, 1861-4; Treasurer of Victoria, 1861-3. Died Feb. 3, 1866, at South Yarra, near Melbourne. Some authorities identify him with the William 'Charles,' who in 1843 was a member of the Grant district council. If so, emigrated to Victoria in or before 1843.
