Left Cambridge and studied at Berlin and Paris. Physician to the Manchester
Infirmary, 1828-35. Settled at Ledbury, c. 1843. Inherited a large
fortune from his father. Fellow of the Chemical and Geological Societies.
Corresponding Member of the Academy of Turin. F.R.S., 1834. Married Margaret,
dau. of Thomas Allen, F.R.S. Author, numerous papers on physiology and
chemistry. Literary executor of John Dalton; published his Life and
Works
in 1848. Died Jan. 7, 1892, at Haffield, Ledbury. (Venn, II.
