Hammond (formerly Ewbanke), Anthony.
Adm. pens. (age 17) at TRINITY, Feb. 20, 1776. S. of John [Ewbanke], of
Richmond, Yorks. [B. there Sept. 30, 1758.] School, Scorton, Yorks. (Mr
Holmes). Matric. Lent, 1776. Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, Apr. 9, 1777. Succeeded
his great-uncle, Peter Hammond, of Bolton Hall and Spennithorne, Yorks., in
1773, on condition of his taking the name of Hammond. Also purchased the manor
and mansion of Hutton Bonville, Birkby, Yorks., and resided there. D.L. for
the North Riding. Practised below the Bar as a special pleader at the Inner
Temple and on the Western Circuit. In 1824 was examined by a select
Parliamentary Committee appointed to consider the expediency of consolidating
and amending the criminal law of England, and submitted a draft measure for
that purpose, which was later developed into a regular code, and formed the
basis of the Larceny Laws Repeal and Consolidation, Criminal Procedure and
Malicious Injuries to Property Act. Called to the Bar, 1828. Married Oct. 21,
1790, Jane, dau. of John Close, Esq., of Easby Hall, Yorks., clerk of the
Assize for Northern Circuit and Bencher. Author, The Law of Nisi Prius;
Reports in Equity
