Hamilton-Rowan (formerly Hamilton), Archibald. Adm. pens. at QUEENS', June 22, 1768. Of Middlesex. S. and h. of Gawin (or Gawen) Hamilton, Esq., of Killyleagh Castle, Co. Down, Ireland [and Jane, dau. of William Rowan, Esq., barrister-at-law]. B. May 12, 1751, in Rathbone Place, London. School, Westminster. Adopted the additional surname of Rowan, on inheriting property from his grandfather, c. 1767. Matric. Michs. 1768; Scholar, 1769. Migrated to Jesus, May 22, 1770 (having been expelled from Queens' for loose-living). Served as Lieut.-Col. in Portugal, 1777. Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, Nov. 12, 1781. Lived in Paris, 1781-4. Removed to Ireland in 1784 and purchased the estate of Rathcoffey, Co. Kildare. Enlisted as a private in his father's company of Killyleagh Volunteers, succeding his father in the command of these Volunteers, 1786. Won notoriety c. 1788 by the publication of Investigation of the Sufferings of Mary Neal (for an account of this case, see D.N.B.). An original member of the Northern Whig Club, Belfast, 1790. Joined the Society of United Irishmen, 1791. Arrested and subsequently imprisoned at Dublin on a charge of distributing [p.217] a seditious pamphlet, 1794; escaped to France and proceeded to America; obtained pardon and returned to England, 1803. A warm supporter of Catholic Emancipation. Resided at Killyleagh Castle. Married, 1781, Sarah Anne, dau. of Walter Dawson, of Lisanisk, Co. Monaghan, and had issue. Died Nov. 1, 1834.
