Hannah, dau. of Sir Thomas Frederick, sometime Governor of Fort St David, E.
Indies]. B. Feb. 20, 1748-9. School, Eton. Matric. Michs. 1766. Succeeded his
father as 2nd Bart., Oct. 10, 1772. Sheriff of Herts., 1774-5. Succeeded to
the family estate of Ferryside, Coldingham, Berwicks., in 1785, on the death
of his father's 1st cousin, Elizabeth Robertson, widow, dau. of Alexander Home
(sic), of Ferryside. M.P. for Petersfield, 1774-80; for Hastings,
1807-18. F.S.A.; F.R.S., Dec. 14, 1775. One of the founders of the Geological
Society; [p.485] Vice-President, 1809-13. Collector of minerals and precious
stones, and of pictures. His collection of pictures was acquired chiefly
between 1786 and 1800, at Venice and Bologna; it included numerous works of
Titian, and some portraits by Reynolds, one of which–of Hume himself–is now in
the National Gallery. Married, Apr. 25, 1771, Amelia, dau. of John Egerton,
Bishop of Durham, and had issue. Of Wormley, Herts., and Ferryside, Berwicks.
On his death, the manor of Wormley passed to the children of his second
daughter Sophia (wife of the 2nd Baron Brownlow), one of whom was John Hume
Cust, Viscount Alford (1832). Died s.p.m. Mar. 24, 1838. Buried at
