Projected the Cambridge Antiquarian Society, and was its secretary, 1840. Published Life and Inventions of Sir Samuel Morland, 1838, and an edition of Mandeville's Travels, 1839. In 1840-1, prepared for press 23 works, including three tracts on Cambridge MSS., Rara Mathematica, and his earliest Shakespearean works. Edited works for Camden Society, 1839-44, Percy Society, 1842-50, and Shakespeare Society. Catalogued Chetham Library MSS., 1841-2. Author, Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Words, 1847; Life of Shakespeare, 1848; New Boke about Shakespeare and Stratford-on-Avon, 1850; Dictionary of Old English Plays, 1860; Illustrations of the Life of Shakespeare, 1874, and Outlines, 1881-7. Arranged and described the Stratford-on-Avon archives, and wrote much of the history of the town, besides initiating the movement, 1863, for purchasing the site of New Place. Accused of taking MSS. from the library of Trinity College, 1844, and forbidden to enter British Museum library, 1845. Presented his Shakespearean library to the University of Edinburgh, 1872.
