(1872) were, especially in their younger days, frequently mistaken for one another: as boys they used often to stay at Knutsford with their great-aunts, Mary and Lucy Holland, who were the originals of 'Miss Matty' and 'Miss Pole,' the charming ladies of Mrs Gaskell's Cranford. Entered the Navy, but retired as Acting Sub-Lieut., on coming into property in 1875. Took the additional name of Hibbert, by Royal licence in 1876, in compliance with the will of his maternal grandmother, Emily Hibbert, and came to Cambridge without expectation of qualifying for admission. 'Being a sailor, however, it was assumed that he could row, and thus he matriculated with flying colours.' Railway director. Lived at Munden, Herts. J.P. and D.L. Member of the Herts. County Council from its inception. High Sheriff, 1890. Closely associated with many philanthropic movements. Succeeded his twin brother as Viscount Knutsford, July 27, 1931.
