15) from Christ Church, Oxford, Nov. 2, 1781; B.A. and M.A. (Oxford) 1788;
M.B. (Oxford) 1790; M.D. (Oxford) 1791. F.R.C.P., 1794. G.C.H. Physician to
the Middlesex Hospital and successively to three sovereigns. President,
R.C.P., 1820-44. Assumed, by Royal licence, Oct. 12, 1814, the surname of
Halford, in lieu of Vaughan, on his succession to the Wistow, Leics., estate
through his mother. Created Bart., 1809. Known as 'the eel-backed baronet.'
Present at the opening of Charles I's coffin, 1813, and obtained possession of
a portion of his skull, which he was wont to show at his dinner-table. Married
and had issue. Died Mar. 9, 1844. Buried at Wistow. Grandfather of the next.
