Rede Lectureship and made an innovation by entertaining the Mayor and
Corporation of Cambridge at a feast in the College hall, given by himself.
Served as a Treasury Commissioner to report upon the various University
Colleges of England, 1901-6. Wished to remodel Downing on the lines of All
Souls, but this proposal did not commend itself to the governing body and he
resigned the Mastership. Principal of University College, Southampton,
1912-19; afterwards Vice-President. Secretary of the Universities Bureau of
the British Empire. During the Great War, 1914-19, served as medical officer
in the military hospital into which a part of the Southampton College had been
converted, and made cross-Channel voyages in hospital ships in charge of
