of James Hutton and Playfair and adopted the leading principles of Hutton's
Plutonist system in opposition to the Neptunist views of Werner's followers.
Travelled in Sicily, Italy and the Alps studying geology and architecture.
President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Succeeded his father as 4th Bart.
of Dunglas, July 3, 1776. M.P. for Michael, Cornwall, 1807-12. Married, Nov.
9, 1786, Helen, dau. of Dunbar Douglas, 4th Earl of Selkirk, and had issue.
