Hicks, William Mitchinson. Adm. pens. at ST JOHN'S, Feb. 24, 1869. [Elder] s. of Samuel, schoolmaster [Steward of Cornwall Asylum, Bodmin] [and Elizabeth]. B. Sept. 23, 1850, at Launceston. [School, Nelson House, Devonport (Rev. E. Roberts).] Matric. Michs. 1869; Scholar, 1871; B.A. (7th Wrangler) 1873; M.A. 1876; Sc.D. 1891. Fellow, 1876-88. Hopkins prize, 1885. Adams prize, 1921. F.R.S., 1885; gold medal, 1912. Trained as a physicist under Clerk Maxwell. Principal of Firth College, Sheffield, and Professor of mathematics and physics there in 1883. Guided its development into a University College, and, finally, to its full status in 1905; first Vice-Chancellor of the University, 1905. Contributed greatly to the knowledge of vortices, concerning which he published many papers. Author of a text book on Elementary Dynamics. Turned his attention later to spectroscopy, on which he became a great authority and was at the time of his death engaged upon a new work, The Structure of Spectral Series. Died Aug. 17, 1934, at Crowhurst, Sussex. Buried there. Probably brother of George M. (1871). (Boase, III.
