Geology, 1873-1917. President of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society, 1879-80
and 1889-90. On the occasion of the celebration of his election to the Chair
of Geology, Sir Archibald Geikie characterised the Cambridge School as 'the
nursery of the Geological Surveys of the Empire.' The geologists on several
Antarctic Expeditions were mostly trained under him. Lyell medal of the
Geological Society, 1891. President of the Philosophical Society, 1892.
Married, and had issue, three sons. Chevalier, St Maurice and St Lazarus.
Author, Cambridge in Cambridge County Geographies. Contributed
numerous papers to scientific publications. Died June 9, 1917, at his house,
