Professor of Zoology at the Royal College of Science, Dublin, 1880-1901. University Lecturer in Ethnology at Cambridge, 1900-9; Reader, 1909-26. A specialist in savage and primitive art. After publishing papers on marine biology went to the Torres Straits, 1888, to study coral reefs and marine zoology, and became interested in the natives. In 1898 led Cambridge expedition to New Guinea and Borneo, bringing back a large collection of ethnographical specimens, the bulk of which are in the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. After his retirement he paid a third exploratory visit to New Guinea. Maintained a constant struggle to establish a School of Anthropology in Cambridge, with which cause he remained closely identified until the end of his life. A bibliography of his writings and papers extends to over 200 entries, amongst his chief works being: Evolution in Art; The Study of Man; Head Hunters, Black, White and Brown.
