1890-1908. Classical Lecturer. One of the leading Greek scholars of his time.
The plays of Aeschylus formed the central subject of his studies, and he
contemplated a full critical edition of them. Of his Greek versions of English
and other poetry it was said that 'they are not surpassed, if [p.308] indeed
they are equalled, by any existing productions of the kind.' Author, Book
of Greek Verse
, etc. Died suddenly June 20, 1908, in St George's Hospital,
having been taken ill in a hotel. Buried at Wycliffe, Barnard Castle.
