Trip., 1st Class) 1887; M.A. 1891; Litt.D. 1903. Fellow, 1890-1908. Classical Lecturer. One of the leading Greek scholars of his time. The plays of Aeschylus formed the central subject of his studies, and he contemplated a full critical edition of them. Of his Greek versions of English and other poetry it was said that 'they are not surpassed, if [p.308] indeed they are equalled, by any existing productions of the kind.' Author, Book of Greek Verse, etc. Died suddenly June 20, 1908, in St George's Hospital, having been taken ill in a hotel. Buried at Wycliffe, Barnard Castle. (Harrow Sch. Reg.; King's Coll. Adm.
