For many years tutor and secretary to William Cavendish, Earl of Devonshire and his son.
Travelled in France , Germany and Italy .
Resided in Paris [ France ], 1641-52 ; during this period he wrote his famous book, Leviathan ; also acted as mathematical tutor to Charles II.
Returned to England in 1651, and submitted to the Council of State.
Engaged in controversies on philosophical and mathematical questions.
Received a pension from Charles II.
At 84, he wrote his autobiography in Latin verse.

Died at Hardwick, Derbyshire , 04 Dec., 1679; buried in Hault [Ault] Hucknall Church [ Derbyshire ].
