At St George's Hospital; Physician there, 1793-1803. F.R.C.S., 1796; Censor, 1799, 1808. Appointed Physician-extraordinary to the Queen, 1795, and to the King, 1805; Physician-in-ordinary to the Queen, 1806, and Physician-inordinary to King George III, 1809, from whom he declined a Baronetcy. Married, Oct. 1, 1795, Elizabeth Catherine, dau. of Charles Miller, of Shopwich, Oving, Sussex, and had issue, nine children. On his wife's death in 1812, settled at Datchet, near Windsor, for his children's sake, and restricted his practice to attendance at Windsor Castle. Returned to London, 1826, with a view to assisting his son, Henry, then at St George's Hospital, but when, soon after, Henry and two other children died, he retired from practice and devoted the rest of his life to study and authorship. Was in constant attendance throughout George III's last illness. Author, medical and religious. Died Feb. 19, 1845, in London. Buried in the family vault at Windsor. A portrait of him, engraved on stone by J. S. Templeton, was exhibited in the Royal Academy, 1843.
