1778; M.A., per Lit. Reg., 1778. While at college is said to have been
a friend of William Pitt, but he was a Whig in politics. Adm. at the Inner
Temple, May 21, 1774. Of Killiow in Kea, Cornwall and of Gt Torrington, Devon;
also of St Sidwells, Exeter, and of Baylis, near Colnbrook. High Sheriff of
Cornwall, Feb. 11, 1789-90. Married, June 18, 1781, Theophila, dau. of John
Palmer, of Gt Torrington (and niece of Sir Joshua Reynolds, with whom she
lived and kept house until her marriage). Sir Joshua painted portraits of her
and of her husband; and the picture of 'Simplicity' by him was taken from
their daughter Theophila. Resided for the last ten years of his life at
Plymouth, where he died Apr. 5, 1843. M.I. at Kea. Brother of Thomas (1780).
