Originally apprenticed to a shoemaker in Penrith and spent all his spare time in working sums with an awl on leather: Lord Brougham noticed him and had him educated.] School, Sedbergh. Matric. Removed to Cheltenham, 1855, where he took private pupils. A distinguished mathematician and a good classical scholar. Had a marvellous memory; it was said that when he left Sedbergh he could repeat 20 Greek plays by heart.
